Reuters Wants Answers About Detained Photographer

Reuters says the U.S. military has detained one of its freelance photographers without explanation in Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison. According to the news agency, Ali Omar Abrahem al-Mashhadani, a 36-year-old photographer and cameraman based in Ramadi, was arrested Aug. 8 and has been held without contact with the outside world ever since.

In a statement published today in a Reuters news article, Reuters Global Managing Editor David Schlesinger said: "We are very concerned and dismayed by this unexplained and prolonged detention of a journalist working for us and urge the U.S. military either to release him or provide a full account of the accusations against him."

According to Reuters, Mashhadani's family said U.S. Marines arrested the photographer after they conducted a routine sweep of his neighborhood. While searching his house, Marines examined video and still images stored on his cameras and computers.

The arrest comes at a time when many Iraqi journalists are working on a freelance basis for international news organizations. Iraqi-speaking Arabs are able to travel to places that are often too dangerous or inaccessible to foreign journalists.
